OPTIMIZATION
Your voyage. Your decisions. We bring you the tools to continuously optimize the outcome.
Merging technology & human expertise
Your world is never static: a change in weather patterns, a sudden need for bunkering; tidal patterns or expected congestion in discharge port. Distance is only one input. You own the decisions and the result, but we help you put weather, safety limits, the vessel’s own characteristics, fuel, emissions, ETA and commercial targets into one model, to trade off the parameters and restrictions and decide how to sail.
Let our AI agents run route and speed combinations side by side and see what each one means for voyage duration, fuel burn and emissions, arrival time, TCE and exposure to adverse weather.
Is a vessel slowing down, not following the planned route, or heading into a newly formed storm front? Set sensitivity targets and let your AI agent warn you when a voyage needs your attention – including a proposal for what to do.
Marine Services
24/7 Specialist Support
Sometimes, models are not enough. Every voyage is different, and the uncertainty can be significant. Our Marine Services team of meteorologists and master mariners can review the recommendations before your crew acts on them. Their review is also available on request when a voyage needs a second opinion.
If you use Orbit Marine Services, this is what you can expect when you send a routing request:
Voyage review and route optimization
We review the voyage information and address anything that is missing or unclear. Route and voyage alternatives are assessed against the agreed Fleet and Voyage Strategy, including ETA or arrival requirements, vessel-specific performance and limitations, weather and forecast development, safety considerations, and relevant operational or commercial constraints.
Route recommendations
The recommended route and, when relevant, alternative routes are sent to the vessel together with the forecast and the reasoning behind the recommendation. Where appropriate, the recommendation can also include speed or ETA strategy. If requested, a route comparison can first be sent to the shore team for review and selection.
Daily reporting control and voyage monitoring
We carry out a daily control of the vessel’s reporting and follow up if information is missing or unclear. The voyage, vessel performance and forecast development are monitored throughout the voyage. Updated route, speed or operational advice is provided when weather conditions, forecast confidence, vessel performance, risks or operational requirements materially change. Direct dialogue with the Master is maintained when clarification or discussion of the recommended strategy is needed.
Performance review
After the voyage, we can provide performance reports based either on the Charter Party terms or the vessel’s actual performance. Data and results are subject to an additional quality review before delivery. Vessel performance baselines are reviewed regularly, with operational and voyage data used to improve the basis for future voyage recommendations.

FAQ
What is voyage optimization?
Voyage optimization is planning and adjusting a vessel’s route and speed to get the best balance of fuel, emissions, arrival time and cost within its operational and commercial constraints. Distance is only one input: weather, safety limits, the vessel’s own performance, ETA and commercial targets all go into the same model, and the plan is updated as conditions change.
How does weather routing reduce fuel consumption?
Weather routing cuts fuel use by steering a vessel around adverse wind, waves and currents, and by setting a speed that avoids burning fuel against the weather or arriving early only to wait. Paired with a vessel-specific performance model, it separates weather-related speed loss from the ship’s underlying performance, so every route and speed option shows its effect on fuel, emissions and ETA before you commit.
What’s the difference between voyage optimization and a voyage management system?
A voyage management system records and runs the voyage – estimates, operations and accounts. Voyage optimization decides how to sail it: which route and speed give the best balance of fuel, emissions, ETA and cost. OrbitMI does the optimization and connects to VMS platforms such as Veson IMOS and Dataloy, so both work from the same data.
How is OrbitMI’s routing different from traditional weather routing services?
Traditional weather routing typically means one recommended route from a routing desk. With OrbitMI, AI agents run route and speed combinations side by side and show each option’s effect on voyage duration, fuel burn, emissions, arrival time, TCE and weather exposure. They also alert you when a voyage drifts from plan. Marine Services meteorologists and master mariners can review any recommendation, or you can keep your preferred routing provider.
